The Details
In “Nghê hehe”, Nhichancanh explores the image of the stone nghê guarding the gates of Bút Tháp Pagoda – a sacred and protective symbol (another reason is simply because it looks amusing: a big nose, a smiling mouth, or perhaps because the artist found this figure joyful).
In this artwork, Nhichancanh wanted the nghê to appear approachable by adding the familiar detail of a child’s headscarf. The nghê was also given whiskers and redesigned fur to look truly adorable, even adorned with a pearl necklace - altogether giving off a playful “hehe” (LOL).
Though the artwork is not very large, for the artist it still represents something rather new, since usually the largest size carved is around 35 x 35 cm. The hope is that “Nghê hê hê” carries a smile from the past, while opening a new expression-where traditional art is preserved, yet can continue to thrive vividly in contemporary life!

What makes handmade linocut prints unique?
- Handcrafted Process: The original design is meticulously conceived and then hand-sketched onto a linoleum block. Each print is carved and printed entirely by hand. Factors such as humidity, ink application, and pressing technique ensure that every print possesses unique characteristics. These variations are the true hallmark of linocut art, affirming the product's handcrafted nature - no two prints are exactly alike. This stands in stark contrast to mass-produced digital prints.
- Premium Materials: The artwork is printed on traditional Vietnamese Dó paper. This material not only captures the true spirit of the piece but also highlights its delicate, natural texture. The organic feel of the paper fibers and the subtle variations in the print create an experience vastly different from mass-produced prints.
- Limited Edition: We release only a very limited number of these handcrafted prints. Each print is numbered, titled, and signed by the artist Nhichancanh.
- Versatile Decor: With standard dimensions , the print fits easily into frames available at local shops. It serves as a sophisticated accent for living or workspaces and makes a meaningful gift for family and friends on housewarmings, birthdays, or other special occasions.
